Ca(OH)2 is the purest calcium hydroxide for the production of lime water, which became popular in the 1980s primarily through the publications of Peter Wilkens.
Then as now, it was a simple method for replenishing calcium ions in reef aquariums. It also increases the pH value, which is an advantage in aquariums that suffer from chronically low pH values (e.g. aquariums operated by calcium reactors).
Properties and features:
- very pure chemical
- Solubility in water: 1.7 g per L (20°C)
- pH value (saturated solution): 12.6 (20°C)
Recommended Application:
Approximately 1/2 tablespoon of Ca(OH)2 is added to 1 liter of osmosis or tap water. Ideally, the mixture is done in a lockable container. Suspend once by stirring or shaking and leave for approx.
Allow to settle for 12 hours. The clear supernatant is called lime water and is slowly added to the aquarium, for example in the dark phase or early in the morning, as a substitute for evaporation.
The settled material can be refloated and used 3-4 times.
