Protein skimmers are one of the most important technical devices in a saltwater aquarium and have the important task of removing organic pollutants, such as protein compounds, from the water cycle before they are converted into nitrogen (e.g. nitrate) through biological degradation processes. The saltwater aquarium is constantly enriched with protein compounds through food input, organic waste and dead algae, animals and microorganisms. Since a large proportion of these compounds are broken down by nitrification, which occurs more quickly than denitrification, harmful nitrate accumulates over time under high levels of pollution. The Cube Skimmer removes the proteins (protein compounds) as well as inorganic and organic molecules from the water before the bacteria can break them down. This relieves the pressure on the aquarium water and permanently reduces the nitrate content.
