Protein skimmers are one of the most important technical devices in a modern saltwater aquarium. Protein skimmers have the important task of removing organic waste materials from the water cycle, in the form of uric acids, peptides and protein compounds, before these are converted into inorganic substances (e.g. nitrogen nitrate) through biological degradation processes. The saltwater aquarium is constantly enriched with protein compounds through food, organic waste but also dead algae and animals. Since a large part of these compounds is broken down by nitrification and this happens faster than denitrification, nitrate accumulates under high loads. The protein skimmer removes the proteins (protein compounds) from the water before they can be broken down by bacteria. This reduces an increase in nitrate and permanently relieves and clarifies the aquarium water. Protein skimming works by the electrically charged protein molecules sticking to air bubbles and can be removed as foam (in the foam cup as a brown liquid, adsorbate). Since the protein skimmer not only removes organic waste materials from the aquarium, but also substances important for corals, such as amino acids, a protein skimmer should be adapted in terms of performance to the aquarium and not oversized.

Cube Skimmers are ultra-compact cone protein skimmers with outstanding performance. Cube skimmers work according to the countercurrent principle. This design, in which air and water flow in opposite directions, is the most efficient type of skimming. The modification of the skimmer pumps (disperser principle using a needle wheel) enables an extremely fine bubbled air and water mixture, which leads to extremely efficient skimmer performance. The conical design of the Cube Skimmer, combined with the effective turbulence-reducing air distribution chamber, creates an excellent, fine foam pattern with a high level of flotation at the same time. With all Cube Skimmers, the water level in the skimmer chamber can be finely adjusted using an adjusting screw and can thus be perfectly matched to the water level in the filter basin or filter sump. With the Cube Skimmers CS500 / 900 / 1,500, the skimmer pumps can be electronically regulated gradually and can therefore be adapted to changing load situations in the aquarium at any time. The brushless technology 6-pole synchronous motors used are characterized by extremely smooth running and can be easily regulated to different power levels using the controller. The use of ceramic axles and ceramic bearings increases the service life of the pumps and motors, ensures excellent smooth running and prevents rust formation due to salt water.

Cube skimmers are not suitable for an external connection to a filter tank/filter sump. The Cube Skimmers can be placed directly in the filter basin/filter sump. DC controlled cube skimmers are available in three different versions.
