Nitrite NO2 is a chemical nitrogen compound and contains nitrogen as an essential component. The majority of nitrite is converted into nitrate (NO3) in the aquarium through nitrification. Nitrification is the bacterial oxidation of ammonium (NH4)/ammonia (NH3) to nitrite (NO2) and then to nitrate (NO3).

Especially in newly set up saltwater aquariums, nitrite concentrations can be significantly too high if there are insufficient bacterial cultures.

As a rule, “run-in” aquariums with functioning nitrification do not have critical nitrite levels. If the value nevertheless increases, then it is essential to measure ammonia (NH3). The causes can be too high a fish population, too much feeding, but also medications used that disrupt or even destroy the bacterial cultures.
